Pickleball Injuries
Have you overheard your friends or family saying strange words like dink, rally, or kitchen? They are probably discussing the sport that has taken the country by storm…PICKLEBALL! Unfortunately, like any physical activity, injuries can occur. Although not an exhaustive list, some common injuries can include the following:
Shoulder injuries including rotator cuff pathology from volleys and reaching with the paddle
Low back (lumbar) pain from turning the trunk or reaching with the paddle
Lower extremity sprains/strains (including Achilles tears, calf strains, plantar fasciitis, and meniscus tears of the knee) from quick starts and stops as well as direction changes while running
Pickleball elbow (Lateral epicondylitis/epicondylalgia) from prolonged gripping and repetitive movement of the elbow and wrist such as during backhands
Broken bones (fractures) in the arm or hand from falling on an outstretched hand
For more information about pickleball injury prevention, check out Fit For Life Physical Therapy’s Pickleball 6.
Pickleball-Specific Physical Therapy
The good news is physical therapists at Fit for Life Physical Therapy are experienced in treating all the potential injuries and post-surgical conditions that may result from pickleball. Additionally, one therapist completed a PPR Pickleball coaching course which is governed by USA Pickleball. Information gained from the course allows the clinicians at Fit for Life Physical Therapy to provide more pickleball-specific care.
What to Expect During Pickleball Injury Treatment
Patients can expect quality traditional treatments of their conditions as well as discussions about safety precautions, education to reduce injury risk, and incorporation of pickleball specific exercises and drills to prepare the patient for return to play.
